May 2010
May 1 Home from travels and pretty tired. Ran easy 7 miles around Englewood Dam.
May 2 Morning in Yellow Springs. Only met and ran with 14 miles with Christina as several group members at the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati and Dave didn’t run because he is injured and getting treatments. The last 6 miles of my run was interupted by walking as I felt miserable. Really tired from the week’s travels (more than 6000 miles of flying).
May 3 Afternoon ran 8 miles steady with Rich. Still feeling really tired but a bit better than yesterday.
May 4 Morning ran 5 miles around Columbus. Weather sunny and cool which was really nice. Later ran 9 miles around OSU campus and then back on bike path along Olentangy River. Really felt strong.
May 5 Morning ran 5 miles around German Village in Columbus. Felt pretty good. Later that afternoon ran 4 miles around the near north area.
May 6 Afternoon met Christina for a tempo/speed workout in Yellow Springs. We ran a 2 mile warm up. Then 1 X 2mile and 2 X 1 mile at 10K goal race pace. For us our pace goal is under 6:00 to 5:50. The 2 mile we ran under 11:35 and the 2 miles we 5:35/5:57(uphill). Then a 2 mile cool down. Good work out with pace faster than expected.
May 7 Morning ran 3 miles easy early and then a noon ran 7 miles around Wright State University and Wright Memorial with Rich. Weather was a bit muggy and warm with afternoon temps in the low 80s.
May 8 This morning Rich and I were working the Jobs & More 5K for Speedy Feet Race Timing in Springfield. More than 150 runners took to the Fern Cliff Cemetery roads where Christina Johnston was the overall champion and I finished 3rd. I was just beat from the week’s running and OHCA convention activities. Plus was remarkably cold with temps in the mid-upper 40s with 40 mph north winds. Really raw morning.
May 9 Happy Mother’s Day! The gang (Christina, Rich, Walter, Liz and I) met in Yellow Springs on a bright sunny albeit cool and breezy morning for a steady 14 miler to Xenia and back. Felt great and enjoyed the run tremendously.
May 10 Morning easy 3 mile run. Later Rich and I ran an easy 8 miles around Fairborn. Not too bad but I was a little tired
May 11 This afternoon met up with Christina for interval workout. With the goal of running strong 10K at Peachtree we embarked on our ‘first’ workout. We ran an easy 3 miles then 1X2 mile and then 2×1mile at 10K race pace minus 5 seconds. I ran 11:33 and then 5:35 and 5:54 (all up hill). Then 2 mile cool down. Tough workout but I ws very pleased with the effort. Temps were warm in the upper 70s under sunny skies.
May 12 Ran an easy 2 miles this morning. Feeling really tired from yesterday’s workout. This afternoon Dave and I ran 8 miles easy on bike path around Athens, Ohio. Warm and humid today!
May 13 This morning Dave and I ran 6 miles around Athens and OU. Nice run! Later ran 6 miles easy with Jeff.
May 14 This afternoon ran an easy 5 miles around neighborhood. Racing Oakwood 10K in the morning.
May 15 Raced Oakwood 10K which was tough. Feeling strong I went out to win but finished 2nd to Walter (team mate). Decent effort but really fell apart in the second half of the race. I must like flat and down hill more than steep uphills. Weather was sunny with temps warm in the upper 50s/low 60s. Good day for us Greene Frogs as Walter was first, Kenn second and Christina 3rd overall.
May 16 This morning I was pretty tired and only ran 11 miles steady with Walter and Rich. Christina felt pretty good and did the ‘normal’ 14.
May 17 This morning I ran 3 miles easy. This afternoon I ran an easy 5 miles around Englewood.
May 18 This evening was the Helke Park 5K which is this month’s ORRRC team race. We had a great turnout and regained the top spot with Runner Plus Elite finishing 2nd and WPAFB 3rd. The race for me was just so-so. Felt pretty tired and sluggish. Finished 15th overall (second male master).
May 19 Flew to Portland, Maine today and ran 9 miles around Portland. The weather was horrible with rain, strong winds and temps in the 40s. Overall though I actually enjoyed myself. Later that evening drove up to Auburn, Maine.
May 20 Ran 6 miles this morning around Auburn, ME. Great run in the county to Hidden Valley Ski Mountain. Weather clear and cool. Boy really noticed how far north I was as the sun came up at 5AM. Later in the afternoon before my flight I ran 3 miles easy around the western parts of Portland. Hot day as temps near 90 degrees (boy what one day makes).
May 21 Morning run around neighborhood. Felt okay. Afternoon at Jeff’s house we ran 6 miles easy.
May 22 This afternoon I ran an easy 8 miles around Englewood Dam area. I was really feeling tired today.
May 23 Morning 11 mile run with Christina, Rich and Kevin. Wanted to 14 this morning but felt like I had upset stomach. Later in the evening ran 3 miles around Saratoga Springs, NY (actually ran around Skidmore College campus). Felt okay. Beautiful area.
May 24 Morning 7 mile run around Saratoga Springs, NY, which is a lovey New England town. Warm and sunny. Felt pretty tired.
May 25 Evening 13 mile run around Englewood (home to high school and back). Great run averaged 7:07 round trip. Warm evening around 80 degrees.
May 26 This afternoon met with Christina and ran interval workout of 2 miles then 2X800, 4X400, 8X800 and then 2 miles. Ran 800s in low 2:40s, 400s in 76-78 and 200s 34-38. Felt great.
May 27 Ran 3 miles this morning. Felt really tied but okay after last evenings workout. Afternoon met with Jeff for easy 6 miles at Taylorville Dam in Vandalia.
May 28 Ran an easy 3 miles this morning around the neighborhood. Later met Rich for a steady 7 mile run around Greene County trails near his home. Overall feeling a bit tired but not bad.
May 29 Today was a beautiful cool (low 40s) morning. Ran 4 miles this morning steady. Started running and immediately had to stop due to being out of breathe. Had to stop several more times as the lack of oxygen is really hard to handle at 8200 ft. This afternoon I had a great 6 mile run from Marriott resort to Vail Golf Club and back. Only stopped twice and enjoyed meeting another runner for the second half.
May 30 This morning I ran an easy 4 miles. Did not feel too bad and it was another beautiful cool (upper 30s) morning. This afternoon went horseback riding at Beaver Creek and drove to top of Mt. Adams (14,200 ft.). Good day!
May 31 Happy Memorial Day! Thanks to all the service men and women for their efforts and commitment to America. This morning I ran the Bolder Boulder 10K. Boy what a fabulous event! Entered race (first time group A ) at 5:30 this morning then met up with temporarily displaced Greene Frog and Phoenix resident Chris Buell and ran 2 mile warm up. All in all felt pretty good doing strides. Race started at 7AM with clear skies and temps in the low 50s (absolutely beautiful). After starting I knew I was doomed as I went immediately into oxygen debt and never recovered. Ran first mile a easy and without walking in 6:12. I have never raced at such a high altitude and since I had only been there since Friday I was not prepared adequately. I just simply ran slower than normal and finished in 41:09. After race there was a great runner’s party and expo. Ran a couple of miles and then finally met up with Chris who ran under an hour (he was really tired from running the Laramie, WY Marathon on Sunday.
